When socks wore out
you darned them fresh again
Results depending upon your own art.
The Taff from Cardiff used a basket weave
Wove out a perfect square of wool cross–lines
Warped it neatly over and under
Likening the pattern to ships' ropework
Taking pride in the tiniest of tasks
Until he made a pair of socks from darns
In ordered patterns like the fields of England.
He turned to tailoring tiddly rigs
With low–cut vee and well–flared jean collar
Made tally–bows neat as an angel's wings
And in Handicraft Class made petit–point
Royal Navy badges for The Skipper's Wife.
Soon his jumper sleeve wore its first bright badge
Haloed gold E –– The Economy Star. |
